Learning Menu - May 4 - May 8 + Zoom Meeting

5/4/2020

Parents and Students,
Attached is the fifth grade learning menu for the week of May 4-8. This will be the last official learning menu of the school year; however, students will continue to have access to all online learning platforms throughout the summer. We have not received word yet on when you will be able to come by the school to pick up student belongings. We will keep you informed as we get updates.

All of our fifth grade classes will be having a Zoom meeting together on Wednesday, May 6, from 4 to 5 p.m. This is a virtual meeting where we can all see each other while we talk. This meeting will be an opportunity for students to share memories from their elementary years at Peters. We do have some ground rules that we will go over at the beginning of the meeting so that students can participate in a respectful manner:

Zoom Meeting Expectations
  1. Before joining our meeting, find a quiet place to set up your device without distractions.
  2. Your microphone will be muted unless it is your turn to talk so everyone can hear each speaker. Only one person at a time can talk. You can leave your camera off if you prefer.
  3. Whether you are speaking or listening, please use appropriate and respectful behavior and language.
  4. Stay on topic and stick to appropriate discussions. Treat people online as you wish to be treated in person.
  5. Taking pictures of your screen or recording the meeting is NOT allowed!  Please respect the privacy of your classmates.
  6. All school and classroom rules should be followed while we are having a Zoom meeting.

Please check your email for details about how to access the Zoom meeting.

Parents and Students,

I am excited to read about all the learning you have been doing this past week. I am working on responses to your emails and hope to be caught up tomorrow. Right now, our phones are still not functioning properly so the best way to contact me is through email. I am able to get your voicemails but am not able to make any outgoing calls (at least any that have sound!). I decided to create some daily check-in forms that students can use if they do not have easy access to email. These are NOT required but might make for an easier daily routine.

Parents,
Attached are the Learning Menus for the week of April 13-17. The math and reading activities this week are a bit more structured and may require more time to complete. I will continue to add additional choice activities to the distance learning page here: https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning. Remember, though, that students are not required to do every task on this menu. I encourage students to continue writing daily journal entries and send their teachers an email sometime this week. Please call or email if you have any questions.

Distance Learning - More Information

Parents,
We wanted to share with you some more subject-specific learning opportunities that students can do throughout the week.

Reading/Language Arts
We encourage students to keep a reflection journal and write about their learning experiences and also their daily life. Emphasize to your child that their journals will act as a record of this unique time in our country’s history. These records may someday be the primary sources found in history books!

We recommend that students read independently for at least 20 minutes each day. If you do not have books at home, you can access digital books from the Tulsa City-County Library. Find more information here: https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning/ebooks-and-audiobooks

In addition to the daily suggestions found in the weekly learning menus, students can choose to practice reading/language arts skills through MobyMax and ReadWorks. More information about these platforms is found here: https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning/readworks and https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning/mobymax.

Math
We are emphasizing review of fifth grade essential skills, including place value, operations with whole numbers and decimals, fractions, data analysis, and algebraic reasoning. Students may choose to add entries to their reflection journal for each math activity they complete. Please encourage your child to not just solve problems, but also explain their reasoning.

Weekly learning menus will have a suggested math problem or activity for each day. Students can also practice math skills through MobyMax, Accelerated Math, and XtraMath for fact fluency. More information about these platforms is found here: https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning/accelerated-math and https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning/xtramath-math-fact-practice. Lots of additional math activities will be posted daily at https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning.

Science
OETA (PBS) will be airing educational shows geared toward upper elementary students from 8-12:30 every day. You can find a schedule of their programming here: http://www.oeta.tv/blogs/education/distance-learning-with-oeta/.
This is a great time to do some at-home science experiments, such as the ones found here: https://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiment-library/. MysteryScience has lots of great at-home lessons as well: https://mysteryscience.com/school-closure-planning.

Students are encouraged to record their observations in their reflection journal. We would love for you to share pictures of any experiments you do!

Social Studies
In addition to daily activities from the learning menu, we encourage students to watch episodes of Liberty’s Kids -- https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHeaIWvdbER3Ic90BzhPsH2aJ5KI3UtmM.
These are a fun way to review the events of the American Revolution. There is also lots of social studies programming being shown daily on OETA (see above for schedule). Students may choose to add entries to their reflection journals for each social studies activity they complete.

Enrichment
ByrdSeed.tv has tons of activities for all subjects. Activities are presented through videos but may require additional materials. https://byrdseed.tv/students/login.php. Use Harding45 for the login name and Missyou for the password.

Dear Parents and Students,

Union will begin distance learning on Monday, April 6. This letter details what distance learning will look like for your child in fifth grade at Peters

Learning Menus
We understand this is a stressful time for all families and do not expect our students to sit in front of a computer for hours each day. With that in mind, we are emphasizing choice and engagement over quantity. Each week you will receive a learning menu with suggested daily activities in each subject. Students are not required to complete all activities, but we encourage them to complete at least one activity in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies each day. Lots of additional activities and resources will be posted daily at https://www.bowenpeters.com/distance-learning. This page also includes directions for accessing online learning platforms such as MobyMax, ReadWorks, and Accelerated Math.

Please find attached the fifth grade learning menu for the week of April 6. Additional resources and instructions will also be sent to you by email throughout the week.

Weekly Check-Ins
We would like to check in with each child at least once per week. For this first week of distance learning, please have your child write a letter to one of their teachers. Students can send their letter by email or use the submission form at the bottom of this page: https://www.bowenpeters.com/contact.html
We will respond to letters throughout the week. You are also welcome to call or contact us through Remind.

We hope that you and your child will engage with us during this time of distance learning. Be looking for email updates throughout this week. Please contact any of your child’s teachers if you have questions or if there is anything we can do to support your child’s continuing education.
